Setting up drywall – leave it to the pros

Over the years, I have reluctantly undertaken many drywall projects. Not because I wanted to, but simply out of necessity. When cash has been tight, instead of hiring a certified drywall contractor who really knows what he is doing, I have often gotten in over my head with what turned out to be a complete fiasco. And if there is one thing I have learned as a results of my lack of expertise, it’s that finishing drywall ought to be left to the pros. Like me, maybe you too have fallen prey to the “how laborious will it be” college of thought. This mentality has frequently gotten me into deep water, however the frustration I’ve had when making an attempt to finish drywall has been the most important factor of all. Even if you get a drywall hoist, setting up drywall is a total pain – trust me on this.

On one such occasion, I had the ambitious plan of building a space in our two automobile garage to house a massive model railroad layout. At first I had planned to simply build a wall with a tiny pre-hung door in it to separate the 2 bays from one another. However as often is the case with me, that basic style ended up being manner too easy to fit my taste. Therefore I proceeded to hang drywall on 3 of the four walls so the painted landscape would look right in the background. My thought being, “would not it’s cool to have lots of picturesque mountains, blue sky, and little painted trees surrounding the trains?” On reflection, just connecting a painted panel border to the table would have most likely worked just as well. But that would have been way too easy. Being the glutton for punishment that I’m, I had to finish out the entire space to achieve the result I was wanting for.
